San Antonio police are asking state lawmakers to consider setting up permanent DWI checkpoints. Police Chief William McManus says this year San Antonio has had more then 7,000 DWI arrests.
McManus is encouraging lawmakers to allow officers to stop drivers and do routine sobriety tests in areas where drinking and driving is prevalent.
"Any tool that an officer can use to get drunk drivers off the road, I think, benefits the motoring public," the chief said.
On Monday SAPD deputy chief Anthony Trevino made the appeal to the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee in Austin. According to the Associated Press, Jim Harrington with the Texas Civil Rights Project voiced opposition to the proposal on the grounds that sobriety checkpoints may result in abuse of power by local police.
Texas lawmakers are expected to consider a proposal to revoke the licenses of second-time DWI offenders.
