David Rauf with the San Antonio Express-News reports that State Rep. Phil King wants the top Travis County prosecutor to resign her post after getting arrested and pleading guilty to DWI with blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit.
"I am encouraging her to do the noble thing and to step down," King said, as Rauf quotes.
King had threatened to introduce a legislative amendment that would take away funding for the prosecutor-controlled Public Integrity Unit, which happens to investigate public corruption among government officials, and move funding to the state attorney general’s office.
King was using the amendment as a bargaining chip to get Travis County D.A. Rosemary Lehmberg, who is now out of jail, to resign her post. She apparently sent a letter from jail saying she wouldn’t. Lehmberg’s term ends in 2016. King has said that he’ll bring the amendment up again in future bills if Lehmberg continues to refuse to resign.
There is a bit of irony here, in that some might argue, probably King, that the prosecutor’s "integrity" was put in question when the very same prosecutor responsible for charging Texans with DWI was herself charged with drunk driving.
But whatever irony there is in this case, it’s surpassed by the fact that nobody, not even prosecutors, not even cops, is beyond making mistakes like the rest of us, as this case shows.
