With the use of social media, the line between right and wrong becomes a bit blurry. Within the blink of an eye, a photo can be taken, or a video recorded and can be instantly put online for the world to see. The problem with this is, once you light the fire, how do you put it out? Can you?
Every time I turn on the news, I see a new story that shows both parties in the wrong, but usually ends up siding with one more than the other. Journalists are supposed to be unbiased and just report the news. Sometimes stories are sensationalized and as soon as they go viral, it makes finding the truth a bit harder.
A recent example would be the officer from South Carolina that slammed a student to the ground. According to reports, the incident started because of a cell phone. The teacher asked the 16-year-old to turn in her cell phone due to the fact that it was becoming a distraction. The young girl argued and refused to do so. The teacher then asked the student to leave. The student refused causing the teacher to call in the school resource officer. Reports indicated that he asked her to leave and she refused. That's when things got a bit blurry. The officer moved the girl's laptop from her desk and grabbed her arm and tried to pull her out of her seat. Some videos show the young girl striking him while others show the officer putting his arm around the neck and pulling her to the ground. The video then goes on to show the desk which is connected to the chair flipping over and the girl being knocked over, dragged out of her seat and handcuffed on the floor.
When you examine all of this it is hard to get all the details in order. But when you think about it, both parties are in the wrong; however, as a public official (especially after all the controversy) in the news, he should have known better. The way to deal with this situation is to prevent it from happening in the first place. It is important for parents and teachers to teach respect to the students. It is also important to train teachers and administrators to be more tolerant to pubescent behavior. An even better policy to prevent students from getting injured in instances like this would be to secure the area by getting the other students out of the classroom. This would help prevent additional injuries and might even show that each party is thinking about the overall safety of the other students. What do you think?
